While it is commonly used by athletes, kinesiology or “kinesio” taping can be used to address a variety of orthopedic and neuromuscular concerns. The technique uses a special, latex-free tape that lifts the skin on a microscopic level, promoting better healing, efficient lymphatic flow and improved range of motion while discouraging fascia constriction. The tape can be left on for several days and prolong the benefits of a bodywork session.
Continuing education courses on kinesio taping commonly focus on either basic techniques, addressing lymphoedema, specific muscle groups or common movement issues. Specialized classes for the needs of certain clients, like athletic, pediatric and geriatric clients, are often available. More unique courses will focus on the effects of taping on proprioception or on clients with neurological disorders.
